Digital Dilemma: The Intersection of Social Media Influencers and Pediatric Dental Health

Aim and background: This review explores the dual role of social media influencers (SMIs) in pediatric oral health. While dental influencers promote evidence-based practices and preventive care, nondental influencers often prioritize esthetics and entertainment, sometimes at the expense of accuracy. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted across peer-reviewed journals and social media platforms.Studies between 2019 and 2024 analyzing TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter content were synthesized to assess the reach, quality, and influence of dental and nondental SMIs.Results: Dental influencers typically shared reliable and preventive health guidance. In contrast, nondental influencers frequently spread misinformation, endorsed unverified products, and triggered self-esteem issues.Children's behavior and perceptions were influenced both positively-via gamified brushing routines-and negatively-via risky do-it-yourself (DIY) trends and overcommercialization.Readability and engagement gaps were noted in professional content. Conclusion: Social media influencers hold powerful sway over pediatric dental habits.Collaboration between dental professionals and highreach influencers, paired with improved regulation and digital literacy, can promote safe and effective oral health messaging.Clinical significance: Strategic use of SMIs enables pediatric dental professionals to enhance oral health awareness, combat misinformation, and foster healthier behaviors among children.
