Advancements in Dental Education: The Role of Simulators in Training Future Dentists

Aim and background:The integration of simulators in dental education represents a significant pedagogical advancement, addressing the growing demand for clinical competence and standardized training in dentistry. This review explores the evolution, types, and applications of simulators-ranging from virtual reality (VR) and haptic systems to manikin-based and patient simulation software-and their role in transforming dental education. Methods: This narrative review was conducted by examining published literature, reports, and educational resources on simulator use in dental education.Key sources were selected based on relevance to the evolution, types, educational applications, and outcomes associated with simulators, with a focus on studies from the past two decades. The review includes comparative insights and real-world examples to highlight current trends and future directions. Results: Simulators have shown substantial benefits across preclinical, clinical, and continuing dental education.Technologies such as Simodont Dental Trainer, DentSim, and VR-based systems have improved skill acquisition, tactile sensitivity, and clinical decision-making.Integration with artificial intelligence and digital dentistry further enhances their potential. However, challenges such as high costs, infrastructure demands, and integration into curricula remain prevalent. Conclusion:Simulator technologies play a pivotal role in enhancing dental training by providing immersive, reproducible, and risk-free environments for skill development.Despite logistical and financial barriers, their continued innovation promises to revolutionize dental education and patient care.Clinical significance: Simulators bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and clinical practice, supporting competency-based learning.Their application ensures safer patient care, accelerates learning curves, and facilitates lifelong education for dental professionals.
