Professional values influence the nursing staff’s behaviour and play a decisive role in attaining professional values and identity. This study aims to show the role of nursing history in the continuity of professional values and the development of professional consciousness. It demonstrates in detail how nursing has evolved from a philanthropic activity into a real profession and has become a recognised, independent theoretical and practical discipline. For nursing students, it is important to learn about the rich history of their future profession from the beginning of their education, since progress is built on the knowledge of past developments.
