Investigating ibuanyidanda ageing support and life course theories in pursuit of new directions for supporting older adults in Nigeria

This study investigated how ibuanyidanda , an African Indigenous framework, and life course theories inform approaches to supporting older adults in villages in Nigeria. Ageing in villages often brings significant life changes, and older adults may require support approaches grounded in familiar values and practices to maintain their independence, dignity and inclusion. Indigenous theoretical pathways of ibuanyidanda – emphasising interconnectedness and collective responsibility – and life course theories were combined to highlight the impact of experiences and relationships on ageing outcomes. Through this lens, new directions for supporting older adults in Nigeria can be pursued. A qualitative approach was taken to explore ageing support systems across five villages in Nnobi, Idemili South Local Government Area, Anambra State, Nigeria. Forty-five participants (aged 28–55) were purposefully selected from 15 families that include older parents. The eldest, middle and youngest adult child from each family participated. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed using interpretive content analysis. The study identified culturally grounded leadership roles and administrative structures, with the eldest child in the family taking the lead in coordinating shared support by siblings. Intergenerational involvement was shaped by ibuanyidanda -informed knowledge and practical skills. Participants also emphasised the potential benefits of integrating technology for inclusive and effective support structures for older adults in the village settings. The study offers valuable Indigenous knowledge and practical strategies to strengthen ageing support systems. These insights provide a promising foundation for policy makers, practitioners and researchers working to improve culturally sensitive ageing support across diverse populations.
