La Química en los Ecosistemas Lacustres
Lacustrine ecosystems play an important role in biodiversity conservation. Both freshwater and saltwater lakes are key habitats for a wide variety of organisms, from microorganisms to birds and aquatic mammals. They are also important in the hydrological cycle and serve as natural water reservoirs that regulate regional water flow and balance. In Ecuador, lacustrine ecosystems in the inter-Andean region are particularly important for their biodiversity and for the economic livelihood they provide to local communities. Nevertheless, these ecosystems face growing threats from pollution, channel modification, unregulated tourism, and the effects of climate change. In spite of its ecological and tourist importance, the Limpiopungo lagoon shows signs of deterioration, such as a decline in water quality and damage to its fauna. This situation compromises both the balance of the ecosystem and the benefits it provides to local communities. As a result, it is urgent to implement sustainable conservation strategies that harmonize human development with natural environment protection.
