COMPLICAÇÕES EM CIRURGIAS DE LEVANTAMENTO DE SEIO MAXILAR: REVISÃO DE LITERATURA

Oral rehabilitation with dental implants in the posterior maxilla presents a challenge due to insufficient bone volume, which complicates the placement of implants. In this context, the sinus floor augmentation technique is widely employed to achieve bone gain, though it may lead to complications during its execution. The present study aimed to review the literature from the past five years, identifying the main complications associated with sinus floor augmentation surgeries. The search was conducted in PubMed, Virtual Health Library, Scielo, and Google Scholar between May and July 2025, using the descriptors Sinus Floor Augmentation, Intraoperative Complications, Maxillary Sinus Membrane Perforation, and Maxilla. After applying eligibility criteria, nine references were included and read in full for data extraction. The studies showed that the complication rate associated with the procedure is low. Among the adverse events, perforation of the Schneiderian membrane was the most frequently reported complication. The literature describes several approaches for its repair, including folding of the membrane itself, covering with collagen tape, use of a resorbable membrane, application of lyophilized human lamellar bone sheets, or, in larger cases, careful suturing. Additionally, preoperative use of antibiotics, steroids, and decongestants is recommended to reduce risks. Accurate diagnosis, proper planning, and technical expertise allow effective management of intraoperative, acute, or chronic complications. In conclusion, sinus floor augmentation is an effective and predictable technique. While sinus membrane perforation is common, when properly diagnosed and managed, it does not compromise the success of the procedure.
