A REVIEW OF THE QUALITY OF PRIMARY HEALTHCARE NURSING PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL METHODS
Primary healthcare nurses play a crucial role in patient care, enhancing outcomes particularly responsive to nursing interventions.Performance evaluation is a structured assessment of job performance against preset standards, identifying strengths, weaknesses, and potential for growth. This review aims to synthesize literature on primary healthcare nursing performance appraisal methods through a systematic review process. This systematic review was conducted using databases including Google Scholar.Utilizing the PRISMA screening process, 32 papers were selected. The review included performance appraisal methods from various global contexts post-2000, examining both the methods and their impacts on job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and nurse empowerment. The review highlighted numerous appraisal methods in primary healthcare nursing, with new methods continuously being developed and validated.Performance appraisal not only assessed job performance but also impacted job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and empowerment. However, issues such as low sample sizes, inadequate evidence, high risk of bias, and poor presentation of results were prevalent across many studies.Geographic distribution showed a concentration of studies in Iran, Egypt, and China, with fewer from developed countries.Various performance appraisal tools are available and used in different contexts worldwide.New tools are frequently developed and found satisfactory by researchers.Despite positive outcomes like improved job satisfaction and organizational commitment, the review identified significant quality issues in the existing studies, suggesting the need for more rigorous appraisal methods.
