Feminisms for our time! Urban inequalities and contestations in the age of global change

This issue, Feminisms for Our Time! Urban Inequalities and Contestations in the Age of Global Change, edited by Syeda Jenifa Zahan and Carina Listerborn, foregrounds feminist and queer perspectives on urban inequalities amid rising authoritarianism, anti-gender movements, and multiple global crises. Drawing on the editors’ experiences across the Global South and North, it challenges dominant Western feminist urban theory by centring situated, intersectional, and embodied knowledges that address gendered violence, housing crises, exclusionary urban governance, and collective resistance. The issue calls for feminist theorising that bridges past, present, and future struggles, explicitly aligning with the Palestinian cause and denouncing ongoing genocides, colonial legacies, and capitalist extractions. Its contributions span Africa, Asia, and Europe, addressing themes such as anti-gender mobilisations, queer and feminist resistance, urban marginality, gendered housing challenges, and feminist literary re-readings of migration. Together, they highlight the personal-political entanglements of feminist praxis and reaffirm the need for radical, context-sensitive approaches to urban justice.
