A New Delphacid Planthopper (Hemiptera: Fulgoromorpha: Delphacidae) from Costa Rica with an Updated Species List
A new genus and species of delphacid, Athenidelphax kennedyae, new gen. & sp. (Delphacinae, Delphacini), is described from Cartago Province in Costa Rica. Available specimens are all brachypterous. An updated checklist of the delphacid species from Costa Rica (including taxa reported only to genus) is provided. The new species is the 35th genus and 62nd species of Delphacidae recorded from Costa Rica. Based on evidence from iNaturalist, COI barcode data, and available specimens, the true delphacid biodiversity for Costa Rica is suggested to be approximately 150 species.
