Exploring the Elaborate Biochemical Mechanisms of Plant Defence Employing Silicon: A Detailed Study
Plants have developed a range of defense systems to protect themselves from both biotic and abiotic challenges. Silicon (Si) is a naturally occurring element that has been identified for its role in improving plant resilience to various stresses. The process of Si-mediated plant defense including both constitutive and induced defense encompasses intricate biochemical systems that enhance the strength of cellular walls, trigger the activation of genes associated with protection, and regulate the plant′s response to pests and diseases. The biochemical processes underlying plant defense through Si include strengthening of the cell wall, production of phytoliths, activation of protection-related genes, increased expression of pathogenesis-related (pr) proteins, initiation of defense signaling pathways, enhanced antioxidant protection, heightened production of antioxidant enzymes, reduced oxidative stress, modified plant-insect interactions, and modulation of insect feeding behavior. Si impacts the feeding behavior of herbivores by altering the nutritional quality of plant tissues. Plants treated with Si may exhibit reduced attractiveness or increased resistance to herbivores. In addition, Si have an indirect impact on herbivores by attracting natural enemies, such as predators and parasitoids, which play a role in biological control. Si also interacts with many phytohormones, including Ethylene, Abscisic acid, and Gibberellins, altering the overall defense response of the plant. Further, the presence of Si can activate protective mechanisms that interact with mycorrhizal associations, leading to improved nutrient absorption and overall plant health. Gaining a comprehension of these molecular pathways provides valuable insights into the role of Si in plant defense. Ongoing research is focused on the use of Si in agriculture as a sustainable approach to enhance plant resilience against biotic and abiotic challenges. The present study focuses on the specific biochemical mechanisms involved in the plant′s resistance to diseases and insect pests, which is facilitated by Si.
