Wave Interaction with an In-Line Array of Cylindrical Porous Piles

In this study, the analytical model was developed to evaluate the performance of a pile breakwater made by an in-line array of cylindrical porous piles, and it was validated through model experiments. The analytical model employed the eigenfunction expansion method based on linear potential theory. For validation, the model experiment was conducted by placing two cylindrical porous piles with a porosity of 0.1 in a twodimensional wave flume. The wave amplification ratio at the front of the experimental model, as well as the wave run-up and wave pressure at specific locations inside and outside the piles, were measured and compared with the analytical results. This study showed several merits of the perforated pile breakwater, such as allowing permissible wave transmission to enable seawater exchange and reducing wave run-up, reflected waves, and wave loads due to energy loss through the porous material. The developed analytical model can reduce the range of design parameters, thereby providing valuable information for the initial design of a perforated pile breakwater.
