Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Assessment for South-Eastern Coastal Area of Korea (I): Logic Tree Construction

A logic tree to consider the uncertainties of random nature is developed for the probabilistic tsunami hazard assessment for the south-eastern coastal area of Korea. The fault areas along both the east rim of the East Sea and the Ryukyu Trench are known to be the origin of tsunamis affecting this area. Thus, the fault characteristics of these areas are investigated and reflected in the construction of logic tree. Since the orientation of the tsunami source plays an important role for the coastal areas of interest located far from the source area, the uncertainties associated with the orientation of fault line is added to the existing logic trees developed by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers for the faults along the east rim of the East Sea. And the existing scaling law is added to the recent logic tree of JSCE which has a limitation on the maximum dislocation of the fault. The logic tree is also developed for the faults along the subducting area of Ryukyu Trench following the method similar to the logic trees constructed for the subducting areas of Nankai Trough and Japan Trench.
