Notes on Tree Hyraxes, Dwarf Galagos, and Other Mammals in the West and East Usambara Mountains, Tanzania

We present the results of a short, study of mammals at three sites in the Usambara Mountains, which are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains. These sites are Magamba Nature Forest Reserve and Mazumbai Forest Reserve in West Usambaras, and Amani Nature Reserve in East Usambaras. We documented at least 15 mammal species. Notably, we found the eastern tree hyrax Dendrohyrax validus in Mazumbai and Amani, but not in Magamba. Visual observations and sound recordings confirmed the presence of two eastern dwarf galago Paragalago species. The species found in Magamba is probably the Kenya coast dwarf galago P. cocos, whereas the species found in Mazumbai and Amani is the mountain dwarf galago P. orinus. Further studies of the mammal faunas at these and other sites in the Usambara Mountains are necessary.
