Evaluating Virtual Prototyping Approaches in Integrated Ship Design: A Case-Based Analysis

Abstract Ship design is a complex process characterized by the interdependence of multiple systems and the need to meet ever higher standards of efficiency, sustainability and safety. Technological evolution has made it possible to adopt new approaches, such as integrated design and virtual prototyping, which enable more effective management of the design and production phases. These tools exploit comprehensive digital models, capable of integrating geometric, functional and performance data, to reduce iterative cycles and optimise performance. The use of advanced software improves multidisciplinary collaboration, enabling real-time simulations, interference detection and structural analysis, and facilitating a smooth transition to production and ship lifecycle management. This study applies these innovative methodologies to the case of a double-ended ferry to demonstrate the impact of integrating advanced energy storage systems on weight, centre of gravity and required structural modifications. The results confirm the benefits of virtual prototyping in addressing the challenges of the shipping industry, offering a reproducible model for future industrial applications.
