Evaluating the role of Hibiscus sabdariffa in ameliorating hypertension and hyperlipidemia

Hypertension and hyperlipidemia are common health issues worldwide due to lack of awareness about a healthy lifestyle. In the modern age, people are increasingly using herbal medicines for the management of hypertension and hyperlipidemia due to their health benefits and safety. The objective of the present study was to develop and explore the anti-hypertensive and anti-hyperlipidemic potential of Hibiscus Sabdariffa calyces powder tea.For this purpose, an Experimental study was designed, 30 hypertensive and 30 hyperlipidemic male and female individuals were selected and divided into three groups (G0, G1 & G2).G0 was the control group (without any intervention).G1 & G2 were treatment groups that received a single (2 g) and double (4 g) dosage of Hibiscus tea for a study period of 2 months.Systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels of hypertensive patients and lipid profile of hyperlipidemic patients were determined after administration of Hibiscus tea.The results of current research depicted that the levels of systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive individuals and cholesterol, triglycerides, and low-density lipoproteins levels in hyperlipidemic patients significantly reduced. While high-density lipoprotein levels significantly increased after the intake of functional tea from the start to the end of the 2-month study period.Concludingly, Hibiscus Sabdariffa calyces tea has strong antihypertensive and antihyperlipidemic potential.Further, research can be conducted to evaluate the nutritive value of other parts of Hibiscus Sabdariffa and utilize them as cost-effective, safe, and convenient natural remedies for the prevention and management of different health issues.
