Micromixing characterization of gas–liquid fast reactive flow: Test reaction scheme and experimental investigation

Abstract Gas–liquid complex fast reactions are prevalent in process industries, where micromixing plays a crucial role in minimizing byproducts. A new gas–liquid test reaction scheme is developed to assess the micromixing efficiency of gas–liquid fast reactive flow. The effects of various operating parameters on the gas–liquid mixing in a Rushton stirred tank are systematically investigated. Comparative analysis reveals both similarities and distinctions in the micromixing characteristics between reactive and non‐reactive gas–liquid systems. It is found that the bubble jet significantly intensifies the interphase mass transfer and liquid‐phase mixing. Furthermore, the relationship between interphase mass transfer and micromixing is elucidated, along with their influence on reaction selectivity. A time‐equivalent model is proposed to predict the effective liquid‐phase mass transfer coefficients of the gaseous solute, assuming that mass transfer and micromixing are dominated by Kolmogorov‐scale eddies. This work provides new insights into the coupling process between micromixing, interphase mass transfer, and chemical reactions.
