Experimental Study on a Lightweight and Compact Ku-Band Transit Time Oscillator With Permanent Magnet
To advance compact Ku-band high-power microwave (HPM) sources, this letter proposes a novel miniaturized transit time oscillator (TTO) with a permanent magnet system. The design widens the anode entrance to prevent electron beam interception and employs a compact beam-wave interaction structure to minimize magnet weight. Further, a TM01/TM02 hybrid extractor suppresses surface electric fields. Experiments using an 80 kg permanent magnet providing a 0.28 T field over a 140 mm uniform region demonstrate 410 MW output at 12.6 GHz with a 41 ns pulse duration. These results validate the feasibility of the designed Ku-band TTO with permanent magnet packaging as a practical, compact HPM source for future applications.
