Higher-Order Statistics of the Channel Capacity in the Presence of Interference With Applications to Diversity Receivers and Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Assisted Systems

This paper introduces a comprehensive analytical framework for the evaluation of the higher-order statistics of the channel capacity operating in the presence of fading and interference. The proposed generic analysis requires only the knowledge of the moment generating functions of the fading and interference signal powers for effectively providing accurate performance evaluation of important performance metrics, such as amount of dispersion, reliability of the signal throughput, skewness, kurtosis and q%-outage capacity, which reveal useful insights on the overall system performance. To illustrate the usefulness of the framework, the analysis is applied to two important applications, namely diversity and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) receivers. For the former, we fist consider two case studies which examine the performance of wireless communication systems subject to shadowed κ-μ fading. The receiver utilizes multiple antennas and employs maximal ratio combining (MRC) while the spatial node distributions are modeled using Poisson and binomial point processes. The third case study explores the performance of an MRC receiver in the presence of correlated κ-μ fading with an arbitrary covariance matrix and multiple interfering sources. The fourth case analyzes the performance of a generalized selection diversity (GSC) receiver subjected to η-μ fading. For the latter application, we have considered a wireless system enhanced with an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), operating under Ricean fading and distinct interference conditions. For all cases, numerically evaluation results accompanied with Monte-Carlo simulations are provided to validate the accuracy of the theoretical analysis.
