Advancements in optics manufacturing: five-dimensional bonding of multielement assemblies within a single barrel

The design and manufacturing of high-precision optical systems often require mechanically complex sub-cell assembly lens designs, which can result in bulky and heavy objective lenses. We present a novel approach to optics manufacturing, utilizing the OptiCentric® Bonding 5D MultiAlign technology, which enables the precise alignment and bonding of multiple lenses in a single lens barrel with positioning accuracy of <1 µm. This technology offers a significant improvement in the design and production of optical systems, allowing for a more flexible and less complex optomechanical design. The OptiCentric® Bonding 5D MultiAlign technology enables the alignment of lenses in five degrees of freedom (tilt and shift in x and y, and axial z-position), ensuring that all optical surfaces are precisely positioned and aligned within the lens barrel. This capability unlocks the potential for compact, lightweight, high-performance optical systems, crucial for applications where size and weight are critical. Furthermore, the semi-automated OptiCentric® Bonding 5D MultiAlign technology facilitates a more predictable and plannable manufacturing workflow, streamlining production by shortening cycle times and eliminating process delays, which thereby increases yield. We will discuss the technical details of the OptiCentric® Bonding 5D MultiAlign technology, including the loading and holding mechanisms that enable alignment in five degrees of freedom and bonding within a single barrel. We will also present results demonstrating the capabilities of this technology, including the achievement of an outstanding alignment precision in all dimensions, with cycle times of less than 3 minutes per lens. The OptiCentric® Bonding 5D MultiAlign technology has the potential to significantly impact the optics manufacturing industry, enabling the production of high-precision optical systems with improved performance, reduced size, and lower weight. We will explore the applications and implications of this technology, highlighting its potential to transform the design and manufacturing of optical systems.
