Extreme lightweighted ceramic mirrors for future science and Earth observation missions

Future science and earth observation missions requires more and more larger optics with minimized mass. The typical dimensions of next generation earth observation primary mirrors are above 1 m diameter, so the mass of the primary mirror is very important for such missions. In this paper we would like to present the results of our De-Risk Activity under ESA contract to develop a 1 m mirror with total mass of less than 15 kg and a sufficient optical performance to qualify the material but especially the design of such large optics out of HB-Cesic® for future space missions. Beside the design of the extreme lightweighted mirror blank, we will also present recent results of preparing an optical surface for such mirror developed by the Deggendorf Institute of Technology.
