Exploring the Antianxiety Properties of Chrozophora Plicata Whole Plant Extract in Wistar Rats

A BSTRACT Introduction: Anxiety disorders represent a significant public health issue worldwide and are linked to chronic stress, substance misuse, and elevated suicide risk. Chronic stress, substance misuse, and an increased risk of suicide are all consequences of anxiety disorders, which are a major worldwide health problem. Aim: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the anxiolytic potential of Chrozophora plicata , a medicinal plant traditionally used in India, particularly for its antioxidant and therapeutic properties. Materials and Methods: Two well-known behavioral models, the elevated plus maze (EPM) and the light-dark paradigm, were used to evaluate the ethanolic extract of the whole plant, which was prepared using a maceration procedure, for its anxiolytic effects on Wistar rats. To evaluate the plant extract’s dose-dependent efficacy, three distinct dosages (100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, and 400 mg/kg) were given. Diazepam was utilized as a common anxiolytic medication (2 mg/kg). Results: The findings demonstrated that C. plicata ethanolic extract, especially at the highest dose (400 mg/kg), considerably extended the time spent in the light chamber in the light-dark test and decreased the time spent in the closed arms in the EPM. Bioactive substances, including flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and saponins, were found by phytochemical analysis; these substances are probably what cause the anxiolytic effects that have been seen. Conclusion: The results indicate that C. plicata may be used as a natural anxiolytic, with the strongest effects occurring at the greatest dosage. To identify and describe the active ingredients causing these therapeutic benefits, more research is needed.
