Global Gathering of Political Economy and China Issues on the Agenda: Reporting the 2024 International Initiative for the Promotion of Political Economy

The International Initiative for the Promotion of Political Economy 2024 Annual Conference (IIPPE 2024) was held in Istanbul, Turkey from September 4th to 7th. The theme of the conference was “The Changing World Economy and Today's Imperialism”. It was attended with over 400 scholars from different parts of the world. Topical issues including world development, financialization, the labor process, neoliberalism, climatic change, industrial policy, economic and social reproduction, etc., attracted many scholars presenting and discussing relevant papers both in the plenary sessions and in the parallel panels. China issues figured prominently on the agenda of the conference-its economic model, development strategies, and interaction with the rest of the world were warmly discussed. Whilst most of the contributions were of reasonable scholarship, there were also quite some views of misunderstanding and misrepresenting China. These intellectual orientations of political economy worldwide suggest that the profession of Chinese economists ought to be more active in engaging with the relevant dialogues and debates in the broader world.
