Abortion is not a modern intervention—and history teaches us that prohibition fails

MPs in the UK recently voted to decriminalise abortion, while US abortion rights continue to be curtailed and many countries prohibit access entirely. Through her new book Mary Fissell, professor in the history of medicine at Johns Hopkins University, illustrates how ending pregnancies is nothing new. She tells <i>The BMJ</i> what doctors can learn from that history
