Alternative Driving Ability with Adaptation of Vehicles Corresponding to the Disability of Bilateral Transradial Amputation
Abstract A 30-year-old male who is a bilateral transradial amputee presented for a fitness assessment to drive a light motor vehicle. In the initial assessment, it was found that the usual vehicle adaptations were insufficient in this case. Physical constraints frequently prevent amputees from achieving mobility, independence and a social life. Transportation in regular vehicles may not fulfil their needs. Adaptation of vehicles addresses these challenges. A medical committee consisting of three physiatrists was created, and each one assessed him separately on his physical and functional ability and suggested suitable adaptations to overcome the shortcomings. He was reassessed with the adaptations and was found to be able to drive the vehicle smoothly and without any jitteriness. Here, we discuss the systematic driving eligibility assessment protocol and prescription of adaptation to fill the gap in the operation of a vehicle for a case of a bilateral transradial amputee for the light motor vehicle, making him integrated into society.
