A Cross Sectional Analysis of Prosthesis and Orthosis Workshop Functioning in a Central Indian Tertiary Care Hospital Identifying the Commonest Illness Catered to, Most Common P and O Products Fabricated and Standard Duration of Delivery Time

Abstract Introduction: Awareness about prosthesis and orthosis (P and O) devices is very rudimentary in Central India, as also there is limited access. Adequate evidence-based recommendations regarding efficiency or beneficiary profiles about P and O services can help the decision-makers in optimisation of such services in resource-poor countries. Aim: The aim of the study was to gather information about the most common illness catered, the most common P and O products fabricated and the standard duration of delivery time in a standard P and O workshops in a central Indian tertiary care hospital. Materials and Methods: It was a retrospective cross-sectional study of the past 40 months (March 2021–July 2024) done in the P and O workshop of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, AIIMS, Raipur. Results: A total of 366 P and O products were fabricated, with pes planus (25.9%), osteoarthritis knee (16.39%) and paraplegia (11.2%) being the three most common diseases catered. The mean delivery time of below knee prosthesis was the maximum (24.64 days) and shoewear arch support (3.1 days) was minimum in our study. Conclusion: In the initial stage footwear, modification and lower extremity orthosis should be the focus and can serve the maximum cliental of a P and O workshop.
