Bridging Gaps in Obesity Care through Effective Comprehensive History Taking: Foundation for Effective Management
This article aims to review the very first and important step in weight management, which is “history taking.” The prevalence of obesity is rapidly increasing all over the world. In the last thirty years, obesity in adults has increased by two times, and in adolescents, it has increased by 4 times. Environmental, social, psychological, and genetic factors influence the occurrence of obesity. Effective management of obesity includes addressing all underlying factors by taking a thorough history, detailed physical examination, laboratory investigation, and treatment. History-taking is the most crucial first step in developing the most effective and efficient plan. History taking includes details about nutrition, diet, eating patterns, behaviour, weight history, and history of earlier measures that helped in weight loss. Asking about stress factors, sleep, physical activity, and other associated medical conditions is also an important component of history taking in patients with obesity. This approach of detailed history taking can help to develop a more personalized treatment plan and effective weight management.
