Microstructure Evolution and Mechanical Properties of Commercially Pure Titanium Sheets after Thermomechanical Treatment with Cold Rolling and Annealing

Optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis reveal that 40–60% rolling reduction followed by annealing at 590–630 °C for 60–90 min produces homogeneous equiaxed grains with complete static recrystallization (SRX) and minimal residual stress. Moreover, the recrystallization kinetics show strong temperature and duration dependence, with insufficient thermal input retaining deformation twins and excessive parameters causing grain coarsening (>630 °C) or mixed structures (>60% reduction). Kernel average misorientation (KAM) and grain orientation spread (GOS) analyses quantitatively reveal the progressive stress relief and stored energy reduction during annealing. The study establishes that deformation heterogeneity governs SRX nucleation sites, while twin‐boundary‐assisted strain accommodation dominates intermediate annealing stages. Additionally, tensile tests demonstrate an optimal strength‐ductility balance (yield strength: 271–339 MPa, ultimate tensile strength: 423–488 MPa, fracture strain: 0.51–0.54) through controlled the formation of SRX, while complete recrystallization further enhances ductility. These findings provide fundamental insights into recrystallization control and practical guidelines for manufacturing high‐performance CP‐Ti sheets, with an identified optimal processing window (40–60% reduction + 590–630 °C/60–90 min) effectively preventing common microstructural defects while ensuring excellent mechanical properties. Meanwhile, the weaker bimodal basal texture demonstrates effective microstructural restoration through optimized annealing.

Abstract

Optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis reveal that 40–60% rolling reduction followed by annealing at 590–630 °C for 60–90 min produces homogeneous equiaxed grains with complete static recrystallization (SRX) and minimal residual stress. Moreover, the recrystallization kinetics show strong temperature and duration dependence, with insufficient thermal input retaining deformation twins and excessive parameters causing grain coarsening (>630 °C) or mixed structures (>60% reduction). Kernel average misorientation (KAM) and grain orientation spread (GOS) analyses quantitatively reveal the progressive stress relief and stored energy reduction during annealing. The study establishes that deformation heterogeneity governs SRX nucleation sites, while twin‐boundary‐assisted strain accommodation dominates intermediate annealing stages. Additionally, tensile tests demonstrate an optimal strength‐ductility balance (yield strength: 271–339 MPa, ultimate tensile strength: 423–488 MPa, fracture strain: 0.51–0.54) through controlled the formation of SRX, while complete recrystallization further enhances ductility. These findings provide fundamental insights into recrystallization control and practical guidelines for manufacturing high‐performance CP‐Ti sheets, with an identified optimal processing window (40–60% reduction + 590–630 °C/60–90 min) effectively preventing common microstructural defects while ensuring excellent mechanical properties. Meanwhile, the weaker bimodal basal texture demonstrates effective microstructural restoration through optimized annealing.
