Re-Vitalizing the Emerging Shammar Play in North Oman

Summary Full evaluation of the Southern area was carried to understand the possible extension of Shammar sand fairways following recent discovery. The cuttings description was key to prove presence of sands in one of the old wells drilled in the 2D coverage giving hope for greater success for Shammar Play in the new venture area. The new 3D seismic data brought higher resolution understanding of the Alpine I and II tectonic events in the studied area, and it allowed a higher resolution definition of Natih and Fiqa Formations below the Shammar. The 3D imaging revealed the presence of channels at the base Cenozoic unconformity that were never observed in the northern development areas, and it also helped to map narrow valleys in the subcrops of Natih Formation where the 2024 Shammar discovery well is located. The valleys were better defined in WBSD, ED, GSD, and RMS extractions. These new models and findings will aid future exploration campaigns for the Shammar Play to test new opportunities in what was considered “White space”.
