Unlocking New Reservoir Insights with FWI

Summary High-resolution full-waveform inversion (FWI) velocity models and images are increasingly becoming standard practice in seismic imaging projects, offering improved structural clarity and more geologically-consistent models. While the value of high-resolution FWI (HR-FWI) for imaging is well established, its impact on quantitative interpretation workflows is still being actively explored. In this study, we investigate the benefits of using HR-FWI for reservoir characterization within two geologically distinct settings: a shallow reservoir target below chalk in the Norwegian Sea, and a deep Albian reservoir offshore West Africa buried beneath mass transport complexes. In both examples, we assess how higher-frequency FWI updates contribute to improved stratigraphic elastic inversion results. By comparing reservoir inversions performed with lower- and higher-resolution FWI velocity models, we aim to demonstrate how HR-FWI not only enhances seismic imaging but also improves reservoir properties estimation (better match at well location) and reduces interpretation uncertainty.
