Digital Transformation and Operations Management in the Manufacturing Sector: A Study on Efficiency and Innovation

The manufacturing sector is undergoing a significant shift as digital technologies are integrated into core operational processes. This transformation, often referred to as Industry 4.0, includes the adoption of advanced tools such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and data analytics. These technologies promise improvements in operational efficiency, from reduced production downtime to enhanced quality control, while unlocking opportunities for innovation in products, processes and business models. This conceptual paper proposes a framework that connects digital transformation with operational performance and innovation outcomes in manufacturing industries.Drawing on the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework and dynamic capabilities theory, this study explores how digital maturity influences efficiency, how efficiency enables innovation, and what organizational factors shape these relationships.By combining insights from the literature with a proposed mixed-method research design, this study aims to provide practical recommendations for managers and contribute to the academic conversation on digital transformation in manufacturing.
