Mobile Bridge Berlin Plötzensee, 2022

The project involves constructing a bridge connecting two prison buildings in Berlin, the JVA Plötzensee and JVA Charlottenburg, across the Friedrich-Olbricht-Damm. The competition winning design features an innovative lifting mechanism that raises the suspended floor to achieve a clearance height of 9 meters for heavy transports, without moving the rest of the structure. The primary load-bearing structure, including the roof, remains static, while only the floor and its attached three-hinged façade mullions are lifted. This reduces the mechanical complexity and energy consumption of the lifting process. The facade folds outward during the lift, creating a dynamic building form that adapts to functional needs.
