Ava Footbridge: Design for Manufacture and Back to Structural Basics

The AVA footbridge aims to disrupt the conventional procurement, carbon cost and slow construction processes in rail footbridge projects. Designed with modular construction, it offers a high-quality, efficient and sustainable solution for the UK’s Access for All programme. The structure is made from precision-cut stainless steel sheets, reducing maintenance costs and enhancing durability compared with traditional materials. The modular approach allows for easier assembly and faster on-site installation using minimal specialised equipment. Each element of the bridge, including stairs and lifts, is preassembled and tested for rapid deployment, ensuring minimal disruption to station operations. The high strength of stainless steel enables thinner, more efficient sections, while preloaded bolts provide secure connections. The design also incorporates integrated lifts for inclusive access. The adaptability of the AVA footbridge to different station constraints and its focus on manufacturing innovation align with the principles of ‘Industry 4.0’. The product is now ranked highly in Network Rail’s Footbridges & Subways Manual, leading to its integration into the standard design suite. The first implementation is scheduled for Stowmarket in 2025.
