Low-embodied carbon footbridges

This paper draws upon the work of the Net Zero Bridges Group (NZBG) to ask how we can maximise the positive “carbon benefits” associated with footbridges, while minimising the “carbon costs” associated with their construction and maintenance. Can we ever achieve Net Zero footbridges, where the embodied carbon is itself eliminated?

The paper explores the context of the Net Zero challenge; it explains industry-standard decarbonisation principles and how these can be applied to bridges; and it identifies some of the key challenges to making greater progress, as well as opportunities to accelerate positive action.
