Improving the quality of the medication process in a Mobile Emergency Service

Abstract Objective To assess compliance with quality criteria and measure the effect of interventions to improve quality in the medication process in a Mobile Emergency Care Service. Methods This is a quasi-experimental before-and-after study with intervention. It was carried out through a quality improvement cycle in the medication process in a mobile emergency pre-hospital care service. To assess compliance with quality criteria, data collection occurred through documentary analysis of care records of patients assisted by the advanced support team from July to August 2022 and February to April 2023. The effect of the interventions was estimated based on absolute and relative improvement values. The Z value was calculated to verify statistical significance. Nonconformities were presented using the Pareto diagram. Results In the first assessment, only the “patient identification” criterion showed compliance of more than 50%. After the interventions, the criteria for patient identification, allergy registration, identification of healthcare professionals and registration of commonly used medications reached compliance of more than 80%. After 90 days of interventions, compliance of the first three criteria was maintained at 80%, which represents an absolute improvement of 87.5%. Conclusion Planned and implemented quality interventions, in a multifaceted manner, promoted significant improvement in the medication process, represented by the increase in compliance with the criteria in the second and third assessments.
