Navigating Power and Vulnerability in Black Couples: The Impact of Female Breadwinning
Abstract: This study examines power and vulnerability dynamics in Black heterosexual couples where the female partner earns more. Through semi-structured interviews with six couples, findings reveal how race-gender stereotypes like the "strong Black woman" and "lazy Black man" shape relational experiences. Male partners often feel diminished authority, while female partners navigate tensions between societal expectations and desires for emotional connection. Internalized schemas influence decision-making and emotional openness. Highlighting systemic inequities and their relational impact, the study calls for culturally sensitive therapeutic interventions to foster open dialogue and address stereotypes affecting Black couples' relational dynamics.
