Collagen therapy opportunites for rehabilitation after plastic surgery

Hypertrophic scars are a specific issue reported after plastic surgery. Collagen therapy is one of promising methods to control a wound and to improve its reparation. Clinical efficacy of a medical device based on native type I collagen has been already demonstrated in an ischemic wound animalmodel. Acting as a natural substrate for cell attachment, collagen can mediate a great number of physiological interactions (from angiogenesis to re-epithelialization) that promote regeneration during a complex process of wound healing, The paper demonstrates 2 clinical case studies related to the medical device based on native type I collagen used to control and to improve healing of a post-traumatic and a post-operative wounds. The first patient showed accelerated wound healing resulted in a normotrophic negligible scar. Along with this, controlled and improved healing of a hypertrophic scar was reported in the patient with a post-operative wound. Therefore, this demonstrates efficacy of the medical device based on native type I collagen. KEYWORDS: wound healing, hypertrophic scar, collagen, collagen therapy, regeneration control.
