Systems Medicine Education at Georgetown University

The rapid expansion of high-throughput “-omics” technologies and the integration of large-scale clinical datasets have transformed the landscape of medicine, creating a critical need for professionals trained at the interface of biology, medicine, and data science. The Master of Science in Systems Medicine program at Georgetown University was established as the first graduate program of its kind in the United States to address this emerging demand.
This intensive 32-credit program, completed in ten months, provides interdisciplinary training in genomics, clinical informatics, biomedical data analytics, and applications of AI, while integrating applications in drug design, microbiomics, and translational research. The curriculum is complemented by a required mentored practicum, allowing students to engage directly with researchers and clinicians at premier institutions such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and MedStar Health.
A distinctive feature of the program is its emphasis on experiential learning in real-world data environments. Through partnerships with leading healthcare and research organizations, students gain hands-on exposure to next-generation sequencing, precision medicine approaches, and applied artificial intelligence in clinical and translational contexts.
Graduates are equipped with a systems-level understanding of disease mechanisms and the computational skills needed to analyze and interpret complex biomedical datasets. This positions them for careers across academia, healthcare, policy, and industry, and prepares them to contribute to the paradigm shift toward personalized and data-driven medicine.
By training the next generation of physician-scientists, data specialists, and biomedical innovators, the Georgetown MS in Systems Medicine program serves as a national model for interdisciplinary graduate education at the interface of medicine and data science.
