Efficient and Privacy-Preserving Authentication Using Verifiable Credentials

Verifiable credentials are designed for decentralized identity management systems. However, the majority of the current identity and access management systems are centralized based on OIDC or SAML architectures that are not directly compatible with verifiable credential schemas. Given that the decentralized identity management model is getting a positive trend due to its high security and privacy features, it is becoming crucial to enable the legacy identity management architectures to accept verifiable credentials. Particularly considering that the complete replacement of the centralized model with the decentralized one comes with a high cost, this enablement has a considerable benefit. In this study, we proposed an authentication approach via verifiable credentials with minor adaptations in the current architectures. In this way, organizations can adopt VCbased authentication without high effort and cost.
