Operation Ágata And Its Effectiveness In Confronting Environmental And Border Crimes In The Amazon

Objective: This article analyzes the effectiveness of Operation Ágata in combating environmental and cross-border crimes in the border region of the State of Amazonas, under the responsibility of the Amazon Military Command. The region, marked by a history of exploitation and developmental policies, presents structural and geographic weaknesses that favor the activities of criminal organizations. Theoretical Framework: The research is based on the foundations of environmental law, fundamental rights, socio-environmental justice, and the institutional role of the Public Prosecutor's Office, in addition to discussing ecocide and legal instruments for environmental protection. Method: This research used a mixed methodological approach, utilizing a bibliographical survey, analysis of official documents from the Brazilian Army and IBAMA, as well as interviews with military personnel working in the region. Results and Discussion: Content analysis revealed that Operation Ágata represents an important government instrument in combating illicit activities such as drug trafficking, illegal mining, and deforestation, even though it depends on integration with other programs, such as the Strategic Border Plan and the Integrated Border Protection Program. Research Implications: The study highlights the importance of civic-social actions and interagency collaboration to strengthen the state's presence in the Amazon. Originality/Value: The research contributes by critically highlighting the importance of security, environmental protection, and the preservation of national sovereignty.
