Design of a Multifunctional Shed with Ecotechnologies for Implementation on the Third Level of the Ucemich Parking Structure

Introduction: The implementation of a multifunctional awning using eco-technologies such as solar panels installed on a awning-type structure for one of the parking lots of the Universidad de la Ciénega del Estado de Michoacán de Ocampo (UCEMICH), located in Sahuayo, Michoacán, Mexico. Its primary function is to generate electricity, while secondary effects include rainwater harvesting and shading to reduce temperature in the installation area. The overall objective is to create the design and determine the reduction in electricity consumption through calculations and using simulation software to validate the results. This reduction is determined by the site's irradiance and historical consumption data collected from bills for different periods. This reduction is compared with the reduction in consumption after the implementation of the Photovoltaic System (PVS). This represents a 41% savings with a return on investment of 7 years and 9 months. Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the reduction in energy consumption through the implementation of photovoltaic panels in a shed-type structure. The goal is to create the design and determine the reduction in electricity consumption through calculations and simulation software for the validation of results. Theoretical Framework: This topic presents the main concepts and theories that support the research. 1. Aslam et al.'s theory in 2018; 2. Badami's theory in 2015; 3. Oluwasayo's theory in 2016; 4. Samar's theory in 2023. These theories stand out, providing a solid foundation for understanding the context of the research. Method: The methodology adopted for this research includes determining the design of the multifunctional shed, which considers the installation of solar panels, using CAD software, thus achieving the objective of reducing energy consumption at UCEMICH through theoretical and simulated calculations for validation. Data collection was conducted through field visits, topographic surveys, and an energy survey using bills from the energy supplier, the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). Results and Discussion: The results revealed that the PVF, when sizing limited by the available installation area, represents savings of $785,897.54 MXN ($37,423.69 USD) per year, representing a 41% energy consumption savings. Furthermore, the project involves a total investment of $6,178,151.30 MXN ($294,197.68 USD), which will be recovered over 7 years and 9 months. In the discussion section, these results are contextualized within the theoretical framework, highlighting the implications and relationships identified. This section also addresses potential discrepancies and limitations of the study. Research Implications: The practical and theoretical implications of this research are discussed, providing insight into how the results can be applied or influence practices in the field of energy engineering. These implications could include: 1. Energy efficiency analysis; 2. Use and implementation of renewable energy. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by showing the importance of implementing multifunctional sheds with eco-technologies, the use of computational tools for 3D design, and solar energy simulation software to determine the reduction of energy consumption in open spaces. The relevance and value of this research are evidenced by the implementation of shed-type roofs, which are areas of opportunity for the installation of solar panels and also function as rainwater harvesting areas. The shading generated by the structure reduces the temperature below it.
