Seismic analysis and qualification of the spent fuel storage rack

The spent fuel storage rack freely placed in the spent fuel pool, represents critical infrastructure for spent fuel assembly storage. Seismic analysis was conducted to validate structural integrity under design-basis seismic loading. Utilizing finite element modeling that accurately captures the rack’s structural configuration, this study computes stress distributions, overturning moments, and sliding results under three operational states: empty loaded, half loaded, and fully loaded. Computational results were rigorously assessed Design and Conception Rules for Mechanical Components of PWR Nuclear Islands(RCC-M). The analysis confirms compliance with seismic design requirements, demonstrating adequate strength margins across all loading conditions. Structural stability is maintained without overturning, and post-sliding displacements preserve integrity without damage potential. The rack thus demonstrates functional suitability for long-term spent fuel storage.
