Thermo-elastic Analysis of Functionally Graded Polar Orthotropic Rotating Disk Using Collocation Method
Functionally graded materials (FGMs) are widely used in advanced engineering and scientific research applications and are known for their application-specific material design. In particular, FGMs provide enhanced load-handling capacity in specific geometric directions. The gradation could be a combination of metal-ceramic mixture because of their huge industrial applications. Recent studies on FGM disks offer various methods for solving material variation laws under different loading conditions, but literature on the combined loading effect is scarce. The present research investigates the impact of thermal loading by maintaining a constant temperature and then varying the temperature considering the problem to be of one-dimensional steady-state heat conduction. The non-dimensional tangential stress, radial stress, and displacement of the FG rotating disk were examined for various grading parameters. While there are various methods and algorithms available to solve second-order governing differential equations, this study employs the collocation method for numerical solutions. The objective of this research is to analyze the combined effect of exponentially varying material grading parameters and different temperatures on the deformation and stresses in a disk at a constant angular speed for free-free boundary conditions.
