Planning and implementation of an advanced wastewater treatment stage at WWTP Dortmund-Deusen for the removal of organic micropollutants
ABSTRACT Since 2021, the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Dortmund-Deusen, Germany, with a capacity of 705,000 population equivalents, has undergone significant upgrades to incorporate an advanced treatment stage utilizing powdered activated carbon (PAC) for the removal of organic micropollutants (OMPs). Additionally, an integrated aeration system has been implemented to maintain a minimum dissolved oxygen concentration of 7 mg/L in the WWTP effluent. The design is supported by pilot-scale experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, ensuring the effectiveness and efficiency of the treatment processes.
