The INCOLTS framework: Bridging emerging technologies and science education in schools

The INCOLTS framework (Innovative Cooperative Open-Learning in Technology-Enhanced Science Education) is an example of an integrative tool designed to explore how emerging educational technologies (EdTech) can enhance science education. It incorporates principles of teaching and learning that align with how the brain processes information, often referred to as neurodidactics. Built on Sabitzer’s COOL Informatics Model, INCOLTS emphasizes multimodal, brain-based learning strategies, such as active engagement, pattern recognition, and spaced repetition, to enhance retention and understanding. The framework promotes inclusivity and diversity through personalized, hands-on learning methods that cater to individual needs and learning styles, ensuring accessibility for all students. INCOLTS also addresses the critical need for long-term teacher support (Culture of Exchange) by providing structured professional development, pre- and post-assessments, and ongoing mentoring to empower educators in effectively integrating EdTech into their teaching practices. While INCOLTS is still in development and testing, it serves as an example of how such tools can be designed to align with global education goals and prepare learners for a digital and interdisciplinary world.
