Reading and comprehension skills in Visayan literature among Grade 7 students

The primary aim of this study was to determine the reading and comprehension skills in Visayan literature of Grade 7 students enrolled at Milibili National High School, Milibili, Roxas City during the School Year 2024–2025. The participants of the study consisted of eighty-three (83) Grade 7 students selected through complete enumeration. A survey-correlational research design was employed to describe, explain, and interpret the phenomena under investigation. To measure the students’ reading skills, the respondents were asked to orally read a short story written in Visayan, which was then assessed using a rubric. Furthermore, a 33-item test was administered to evaluate their comprehension skills. In this study, the independent variable was the students’ reading skills in Visayan literature, while the dependent variable was their comprehension skills in Visayan literature. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency count, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, and inferential statistics including One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Pearson’s r, with the level of significance set at 0.05. Overall, the findings revealed that the students’ level of reading skills in Visayan literature was categorized as “very proficient,” while their level of comprehension skills was rated as “proficient.” However, the Pearson’s r test indicated that there was no significant relationship between the students’ reading skills and their comprehension skills in Visayan literature.
