Comparison of Buzz Windrip’s populist program in Sinclair Lewis’ It Can’t Happen Here (1935) and Project 2025: historical parallels and modes of resistance
Targets of Donald Trump’s administration are described in the document by the Heritage Foundation named Project 2025. The rhetoric of the document in some places literally resembles the “Сorpo” state described in the novel It Can’t Happen Here (1935) by the American writer Sinclair Lewis. The detailed comparison of two texts singles out negation of separation of powers and claiming president to be a single source of laws in the country as central for the aspiring dictator and consequently as the main target for resistance. Contemporary means of resistance to initial implementation of Project 2025 in the American society are identified.
