As diferenças de gênero na literacia financeira dos jovens brasileiros

Background: This article aimed to verify the hypothesis that females are disadvantaged compared to males in the Financial Literacy (FL) of young people, and to investigate the variation in the influence of variables on FL, according to the gender of the PISA 2018 participant, in Brazil. Materials and Methods: The sample of this research is composed of 8,311 Brazilian young people aged between 15 years and 2 months and 16 years and 3 months, from 597 schools, who answered the questionnaire evaluating the LF domain. The model proposed for data analysis is composed of a dependent variable, the LF indicator, and nine independent variables in addition to the control variables: Level of education attended by the student, Gender, Mother's Education and Family Socioeconomic Status (SSF). Results: When controlling for gender regression, it was found that girls are significantly disadvantaged in their LF by their parents' involvement in specific issues in this domain (-0.430) and by attending financial education classes at school (-0.144). This advantage only appears in the correlation between maternal education and LF performance (0.324), compared to boys. Conclusion: The study concluded that hypothesis 1 and part of hypothesis 2 were not rejected, as the data analysis revealed that the influence of some factors was altered by adding gender to the model. There remains a gap in research that would address the understanding that other educational, family, and social characteristics influence the SL performance of young Brazilians.
