Application of reconstituted collagen and stainless-steel skin staples suture technique for surgical excision of palpable tumours in dogs

The present study was carried out in twelve dogs presented to the small animal surgical ward of the Veterinary Clinical Complex, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Veterinary Education and Research (RIVER), Pondicherry for surgical excision of palpable tumour of more than 5cm in diameter. These dogs were randomly divided into 2 groups (Group I and II) of six animals each. The data regarding the animal particulars, tumour mass, hematological parameters, lateral survey radiographs and biopsy samples were documented. In group I, standard tumour excision with electrocautery followed by application of sterile reconstituted collagen-based particles and skin closure using stainless steel skin staples was done and in group II, standard tumour excision followed by skin closure with stainless steel skin staples was done under general anaesthesia. The animals were subjected for clinical examination of the surgical wound on 5th and 10th day postoperatively to assess the type and pattern of healing.
