Wattle wood gasification with zeolite catalysts

Abstract Wattle wood is widely planted in Vietnam, circa 1 million hectares according to Vietnamese government. Apart from direct usages as round wood, pulp and fuel, this wood can be processed into renewable chemicals resource via pyrolysis, replacing fossil ones. Such utilization of wattle biochar has been studied, as soil amendment or reducing agent for example, but gas products from pyrolysis is hardly concerned due to its low‐value components. In this study we aim at valorizing pyrolysis gas product while maintaining high yield of biochar. When achieved, this target will maximize the potential of wattle wood as a source of green chemicals. By using ZSM‐5 as gas conversion catalyst, ethylene has been obtained in a mixture similar to ethane cracker effluent, leaving aside carbondioxide which can be removed by available industrial separation. This familiar composition and the employment of such a mature catalyst as ZSM‐5 help assuring a fruitful incorporation of this catalytic gasification into industry.
