Review of O’Callaghan and Shiner’s Cambridge Handbook of the Right to Freedom of Thought

The Cambridge Handbook of the Right to Freedom of Thought (2025), edited by Patrick O'Callaghan and Bethany Shiner, assembles a diverse group of contributors from around the world who have written "country reports" on the right to freedom of thought in eighteen countries across four continents, as well as three important and influential regional human rights treaties. In bringing a truly global perspective, the editors have avoided "fall[ing] into the trap of ethnocentrism as an epistemological phenomenon where the dominating literature is bound by European and North American approaches" (5).To this end, they have included perspectives from jurisdictions often neglected in western-focused discussions of human rights.
